I have XP Pro installed on a laptop. Not many other applications apart from
AV and ZoneAlarm. In fact the bulk of the installations have been the
massive number of Microsoft patches fixes and service packs. Somewhat
belatedly I decided to install a printer on this machine which went through
without issue (I can install a local printer on LPT1 or point to print
queues on 2 workgroup PC's). The queues appear OK and I can bring up
properties etc but the system will not let me print from any application
including basic stuff like notepad and wordpad. Test print also fails and
the error message is a simple "Test failed to print " or "Cannot print -
check settings". The only way I have been able to print anything whatsoever
is when I redirected a DOS directory listing via DIR >LPT1: I've tried
removing and redetecting the LPT ports on the PC. I've shut down all non
essential programs including AV and Firewall but to no avail. The worst part
is the lack of an informative error message. My only clue is the occasional
message in newgroups suggesting that these problems may be due to
downloading one or more critical updates from the MS site. However no
details about which updates are to blame and what to do about them are
provided. If anyone can shed any light on this problem I would be most
grateful.
Regards,
Dave G.
