Downloading document + saving as Word document

I am trying to fill in an application form - from Open University and with a
deadline of this Friday, so I'm panicking just a little. I'm using Windows
Vista. The Student version.

Before saving, the original OU document "description/title" contained the
words Read Only.

Document came as email attachment, then (as I've done lots of times before)
I saved it as a word document - Office 2003.

Thereafter, if I tried to complete the application, I cannot Edit or change
font size, etc, etc, with none of the editing facilities are available from
menu or by right click. They appear sort of cloudy, ie, not usual black font.

Any advice anyone? Thanks for reading.
