i am trying to make a slideshow and bought a song from walmart.com and it's
in .wma format and it says I can't use it because of copyright protection.

I've burned the song on a CD and now I'm trying to rip it but Windows media
won't let me rip it.....it won't recognize my CD as an audio CD. What am I
doing wrong? How can I use this song. I'm so frustrated! I bought this song
legally!!

Maybe the following article will offer some ideas:

Movie Maker 2 - Importing Audio
http://www.papajohn.org/MM2-Importing-Audio.html

The suggestion from PapaJohn in the right pane
about the shortcut works for me.

Sharon,

It sounds like you might have made a CD data disc, not a music disc.
If you insert your CD into your computer drive and then using Windows
Explorer what files do you see on that disc? Do you see "Track1.cda",
"Track2.cda", etc, or do you see 'MyLegallyPaidForTune.wma"? If you
see regular files like .wma files than you have a data CD disc. If you
have .cda extensions then you have a valid CD music disc. If your
computer can't read the disc, then you may have a corrupted disc. If
you have a music CD disc, can you play it in a regular CD player like a
boombox?

Keep us posted.

I burned the disc from windows media player and all the files look like the
icons that are similar on my computer....guess I created a data disc then,
didn't I? How do I create a music disc from wmplayer? Perhaps I can't? I have
been able to play the disc on my DVD player, but I think maybe my DVD player
is more advanced? I can play it on my car cd player too. So does that mean
it's a music disc now?

Until just now, I didn't know how to use WMP to create a CD, either!

It's easy. I use the classic skin for WMP so I can easily navigate
throughout the program. Click on the Burn menu item. Next, click on the
Edit Playlist and select the songs. Once you are satisfied with your list,
make sure you have a fresh CD in the drive and click the Start Burn button.
That's it!

Some DVD players and car CD players can also play data CD's that contain
MP3s, .WMA, or .AAC files, so I can't tell you if you previously created a
music CD or data CD. The best way to tell is to look at the files on your
computer using Windows Explorer. If the filenames are Track01, Track02 or
Track01.cda Track02.cda then you have a music CD. Any other extension and
the disk is a data disk.

All this is moot since it appears that your problem is solved. What was the
trick?

Play it / Record it...as described in the following article:

Movie Maker 2 - Importing Audio
http://www.papajohn.org/MM2-Importing-Audio.html

The suggestion from PapaJohn in the right pane
about the shortcut works for me.

And the other option is to "rip" the CD using Media Player but making sure
to turn off DRM (Digital Rights Management)
