Downloaded updates and machine quit

After downloading KB 835732, 828741 & 837001 my Mcafee
said that some components are missing and it takes over
an hour to load to MY Desktop. Tried safe mode and system
restore to point a day before installation but it still
takes over an hour to get to desktop. When xp start up
screen goes off all hard drive activity nearly ceases.
Just comes in short bits.
