Recently I am having a problem with WINXP and IE. Downloaded files ar
now being classified as IE shortcuts and can't be opened. this i
usually happening to large files downloaded as software updates. th
file size and name look right but seem to have a hidden .url at the en
of name. downloaded same files on older machine with WIN98 and IE 5.5SP
and don't have problem.

It is possible you may have parasites, spyware, adware or
malware on your system causing the problem. Download
and install, you *must* update the programs prior to running to
be sure they have the latest definitions, then run the programs
below. They are free and very effective.Be sure to run both
SpyBot and Adaware, as what one does not detect the other
may. It is important that you follow all directions carefully:

SpyBot Search & Destroy: Free

Check your file type association.

You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.
