Hi All

Using tiscali web based email, I cannot access Excel files using
Internet Explorer. I do not get any error messages or other dialogue box,
nothing at all happens when I clink on the link to the attachment.

I have no problem if I use Firefox, I can open or download xls. files
no problem.

Is there a setting in IE properties that I can change to allow download
of these types of file?

Two systems in use:
Windows ME IE6
Windows XP-SP2 IE6

Many thanks.

Two possible solutions:

1.
You set this for each file type....
File types CSV, XLS for Excel
How to Configure Internet Explorer to Open Office Documents in
the Appropriate Office Program Instead of in IE:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=162059

2.
You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Explorer-View-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

Alan

Thanks for your suggestions, however neither of them
have resolved the issue!

When I use Firefox to open xls. & doc. attachments (there may be others)
I have no problem, but using IE nothing at all happens, I get no errors,
the file does not try to open in IE, nothing.

One other thing I have noticed: if the attachment can be opened,
it has a paperclip next to the attachment link, but if the paperclip
is not there, it cannot be opened!

The paperclip is *always* there using Firefox for *all* extensions.
The paperclip is *never* there using IE for xls. & doc. extensions
The paperclip is *always* there using IE for jpegs etc..

Baffled

George,
This article *may* explain what's happening.
316431 - PRB Internet Explorer Is Unable to Open Office Documents from an
SSL Web Site: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=316431
If that's the situation, you can't resolve it from your end. The tiscali
admins may be able to resolve it.

Hope this helps,
Don

Hi Don

Thanks for the response.
Not too sure about this being the cause of the problem.
I don't get any error messages or any blank pages, nothing
whatsoever happens when I click the hyperlink to the
email attachment.

Everything works flawlessly using Firefox!

It is actually my brothers email account, I will get him to
email tiscali support to see if this is a known problem.

Wish us luck!

Cheers

George Gee
