Download without opening spreadsheets

When I download files that are in spreadsheet format,
they open with Excell. I just want the download to proceed without
opening the file. It used to work that way when I was using Win 95 but
since I upgraded to XP it won't just do a simple download without opening
the file. How do I fix this?

Use a right-click and "Save Target as..."

Right click what?

On the citi cards web site where I download my credit card data, there is a
box with a downward pointing arrow. I click the arrow and the three format
choices are listed one of the choices is spreadsheet. I tried to right
click my choice and it doesn't work - nothing happens. If I left click, it
immediately opens the spreadsheet.

Try this, though there are a few exceptions and Excel may be one:

You set this for each file type
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options-File Types
Find the association
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Explorer-View-Folder Options
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

I tried Explorer-View-Folder Options and Explorer-Tools-Folder
Options with no joy. Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options did
not yield the "Confirm open after download" option. I tried to
send you screen shots of these options but I think your server rejected the
email as too large. I am using XP-SP2 & IE 6.

I don't see the need for screen shots.
You must be trying in the wrong place.
Please try again.

Explorer-View-Folder Options is not for XP.
Explorer-Tools-Folder Options-File Types is valid in XP.
(Explorer is Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer)
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options-File Types is valid in XP.
Both those yield the "Confirm open after download" option for .XLS
files (which I assume you mean for Excel)
I am using XP SP2 and Excel 2003 on this machine.

Alan
It worked. Thanks for your help.

> Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options-File Types is valid in XP.

You are right, I did try internet explorer instead of windows explorer (how
was I to know?).

You are also right that the start- settings..... gets to the same place.
The problem was when I got there I did not see the "Confirm open after
download" option because it is burried a few more clicks away and I wasn't
aware of that till I stumbled on it the second time you sent me there.
Thanks for your patience. By the way, the screen shots would have shown you
immediately where I went wrong - All is well that ends well

Thanks again
Ed
