Domain Restructure

Hi,

Currently I have this structure.

rootDOM-childDOM

rootDOM has DNS and the GC.
I want to get rid of the rootDOM (as it doesn't do anything) and make
childDOM the root domain by itself. Is it as easy as removing the rootDOM by
using dcpromo? I can transer the DNS and GC quite easily but I want to know
if it will screw up anything. For eg... the current computer names are:
computername.childDOM.rootDOM

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I may be making a big deal out of
nothing but I want to make sure before I take the plunge.

Thanks,
Mike

No. If anything happens to rootDOM, child becomes an orphan (litterally and
figuratively). You are looking at something more messy and involved than
just a dcpromo.

DCPROMO will not let you demote the last DC in a parent domain with children
domains.
You would be best to leave the global catalog on the parent DC, especially
if the domain has been put into Native Win2k Mode or if you have Exchange
2000, then the global catalog's availability becomes imperative for logon
and Exchange.
If you want to get rid of the parent domain, the children must go first.
