I need to reformat my hard drive. I have the original version of windows zp
pro. Do I need to apply Windows XP SP1 before SP2?

No. But for better results, create a new Windows XP CD
with SP 2 slipstreamed, then install Windows XP.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

or

AutoStreamer 1.0.33 (preferred)
