How does the Event log work?

Hi,

I have two similar Win2k servers, both have the UPS enabled in control
panel. If I switch off the mains, and then back on again, one server
correctly states "On Battery" then "AC power restored" in the Event Log.

The other server says something like:

"The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or
message DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. The
following information is part of the event"

I don't know how to fix this, and anyway it's not a "remote computer", LOL!

It got me thinking, where are Event log messages actually stored? It
seems to be saying either my registry is messed up, or I'm missing a DLL?
