I have an X1900 GT and am thinking about buying another GT to get a
crossfire setup. What I can't find is whether or not the use of crossfire
degrades 2D quality.

Short answer : No.

Reason: ATI Crossfire, as well as all other modern "SLI like"
implementations, uses a digital interconnect. Currently, that digital
interconnect can occur using the external cable, cableless (uses PCI-E bus
entirely), or using a proprietary internal connector similar to NVidias's
SLI implementation (this is the newest form of crossfire). The external
cable method uses the DVI signal (digital) and some other magic for card to
card communication. Only the original 3dfx SLI implementation suffered image
quality loss - that was due to the external analog link.
