Not too sure how to say this, but I've got a text file of a large document
(Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations) that I've saved as a .doc. I want to insert
section headings or whatnot, so that when I scroll up and down the document,
I can see the book/chapter numbers in a little popup window. Right now, the
only thing I see is page number. I don't want page number (obviously
different editions will have different page numbers).

Alternately--would it be easier simply to create a table of contents with
links to the chapters in the text? What I want is the ability to quickly
navigate to a particular section of the document. I can do this either by
scrolling down and seeing what chapter I'm scrolling through via a popup
window, or I can just navigate via a table of contents with links--whichever
is easier (read: quicker).

N/m. I found that I could turn the chapter titles into document headings
(Ctrl+Alt+ a number), and this would do it. I tried this before, but it
didn't work. Perhaps the document has to be saved first, for these headings
to be used by the scrollbar?

Actually, the new headings aren't seen until I save and then close the
document, then reopen it.

Once you've applied heading styles to the titles, you will be able to use
the Document Map and/or generate a (linked) TOC based on those headings.
