I am not sure I understand your question.
You said " by last name ..."
How about rearrange ( if possible ) all contact names military
style......... i.e.. Hunt, Tom ?

In the Contacts folder:
Change the View to "Details".
Right-click on the "Name" column heading, click on "First Name", then click
on "Last Name"
Click on the "Last Name" heading to sort by that, or click on "First Name"
heading to sort by that.

In a Create Mail window:
Click on To:
Click on the "Name" column heading... it cycles thru 4 different sorts

In the Contact Properties:
click on the down arrow at the end of the Full Name box

Yes,that's exactly what I want to do. I have tried the procedure outlined in
the "Help" as well as a couple of other suggestions, but nothing has
worked..I would like to be able to select recipients by their last names.
Perhaps there is a problem with my Vista Contacts software but I doubt it..
I would appreciate any suggestions you might have. Thank you.

Thanks for responding. I have tried your suggestion but it doesn't work.
Perhaps there is a problem with my Vista program.
I assume from your comments that it has worked for you.I don't understand
why it won't work for me. In any event, I would appreciate any other
suggestions you might have.

Yes, the sorting works fine for me.
If you have separate entries for both First Name and Last Name, and it
doesn't sort correctly, then I'd switch to the newer Windows Live Mail,
which works better.

Yes, Switch to Windows Live Mail. It works and it's easy to change to Last
name first.
Windows Mail stays in your system.
If you like the new one, just un-install it and go back to WM.
