Do USB Flash Drives have to be safely removed in Vista?

Somewhere along the line (probably XP SP2) windows made it possible to
quickly remove USB flash drives without actually requiring to click on the
"Safely Remove Hardware" Icon. Does this still exist in Vista? Because when I
just pull out my flash drive, next time I plug it in, it asks me to scan for
errors. It never finds any, but it is quite annoying.
