How do I get to my desk top from the recovery console?
How do I get to files in My Docs from the recovery console?
How do I test a hard drive when I can't get at my desktop?

Hi Debra,

> How do I get to my desk top from the recovery console?

You can't, the Documents and Settings directory is not accessible from the
Recovery Console.

> How do I get to files in My Docs from the recovery console?

You don't. The RC is limited to accessing only certain parts of the system
necessary for reparations.

Download a drive diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer. These are
usually free and run from a bootable floppy. Be careful which tests you run,
as some can erase data. Have you tried running chkdsk /r yet?

You can test a hard drive by booting from a Windows 98
disk and seeing if you can read from the C: drive. If you
can do a "dir"...your hard drive is probably good.

Not if they're using NTFS :-)

Greetings --

I'm afraid that that's no true test of the hard drive, at all.
WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite sensitive to
borderline defective hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard
drives) that will still support Win9x.
