How do I stop all entries using HOSTS file.

I want to kill all those facebook ads and icons that appear on almost
every website. I added www.facebook.com to the Hosts file. Now, if I
try to go to www.facebook.com, I get an error message. However, if
I'm on a webite that has an ad from Facebook, such as
www.facebook.com/wikihow These still show up.

How do I make a UNIVERSAL entry in HOSTS that blocks ALL facebook
links and ads?

Thanks

Have you tried putting the following entries in your hosts file:

127.0.0.1 pl-pl.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 pt-br.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 en-gb.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 apps.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 developers.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 de-de.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com

The reason is Facebook uses multiple servers to serve the entire world.
Apparently they have more than half a billion customers and so one
server won't do the job properly.

Please let us know if this worked.

Good luck

This list covers all their servers and sub-domains around the world that
are visible to the general public:

You made no reply to whether my suggestion[*1] to you in over in
'microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion' helped at all.

So i repeat ...

.... i see that i have the following in my [hosts] file:

#
# For links to 3rd-party pesky social networking web-sites
#
127.0.0.1 www.addthis.com
127.0.0.1 s3.addthis.com
127.0.0.1 s5.addthis.com
127.0.0.1 s7.addthis.com
127.0.0.1 s9.addthis.com
#

Odd that i've only been annoyed by odd numbered servers (so far).
There are probably other dis-services that web-sites use for this
but test and see if adding this helps more generally then for
just the above example.

The 'above example'[*2] you gave in the other group were
different then the one you give here, but did it help at all or not?

I used Wireshark, to find a few when surfing on my machine.
This is what I have in the hosts file right now.

127.0.0.1 facebook.com
127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 error.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 api-read.facebook.com

That's all I could see, the day I was looking. I don't
usually play whack-a-mole with advertisers, but for
facebook, I was willing to make an exception, as the
prevalent of the links to that site make them good
enough for tracking.

Ok, I put all of these in my HOSTS file. It has stopped many of them

However, I still get these:
On this site...
http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2011/02/...disaster-area/

There is a facebook logo (link) near bottom of page.
www.facebook.com/cbschicago

Seems that any of those with the /whatever at the end is not being
blocked.

Can I use soemthing like this?
www.facebook.com/*.*
Or is there sonmething else to do?

Depending on your browser, you can also do View:Page Source and have
a look through the code. See what references to Facebook are in there.

Using the "view source" facility of the Opera browser on the 'cbslocal.com'
site, I found this host name among the links:

| static.ak.connect.facebook.com

Wild card characters can't be used in a hosts file. You just have to look
for the hosts in the site code.

I had a feeling that wildcards would not work. To Paul (prior reply),
the link was www.facebook.com/cbschicago when right clicking and
showing the properties for that link.

I;m not sure where you got "static.ak.connect.facebook.com", but I'll
add that to my HOSTS. It appears that there is no way to kill all
those FB icons on all pages, but the main thing is that I'm not
linking to FB. I can live with the icons as long as they dont get
activated (connected to FB).

Thanks

Sorry for not replying back in the other NG. Yes, I did add this and
it DID remove lots of those little "social networking" lines of links
that would pop open when moused over. Glad those irritations are
gone. It seems that "addthis.com" is where most or all of them were
coming from. This site provides them for not only facebook, but
twitter, and probably a hundred more whom most I never heard of.
These social networking sites are darn near becoming a virus. Seems
every website has those links. FB is the worst, twitter is next....
I dont want nothing to do with any of them.

In some ways, I think these social networking sites are going to ruin
the web. For example a local tv station used to have a click on link
on their website to upload local news articles and pictures, as well
as email links to the reporters. I used those links several times to
upload pictures of severe weather and once a large building fire.
This week the switched over to using facebook for this use, and
removed the links on their webpage. That's the last time I'll be
sending them anything since I refuse to have a FB account due to their
privacy invasions as well as most irritating method of constantly
reloading their page and telling me that I have a notification and
these notifications tell me something completely worthless like
"joeblow" just posted a photo. I was on FB for about 10 days,
absolutely hated it. Found out you cant even remove the account, but
can make it inactive. I never put any real info on the page except a
disposible email address. I made the page inactive FOREVER and trashed
the email address. I have no use for FB or any of those social
networking sites.
