Is there a way to write a letter from a contact field, like you can in ACT?

Depends on your version, which you did not post.

2007.

I see from the many other posts on this forum that the feature I asked about
is not included in Outlook 2007. That's not good.

There is such a feature, you need to add the Addressbook to the Quick Access
Toolbar

It's not bad either. The feature had grown pretty dysfunctional and few used
it. As Gordon points out, you can accomplish nearly the same thing using
Word's "Insert Address" feature.

It is sad that this feature is not available in Outlook. It should be a
primary tool. It would be great if I could press a button while I am viewing
a business contact and have a Word template pop up. I am using TNTMPD and
keeping a seperate database bacause it has this function. It would be nice
if this feature could be incorporated into Outlook. I will put it on my list
for Santa.
