How do I shut down dangerous processes before BSOD appears?

My sons PC has a problem whereby it will boot to desktop (xp home) but when
within about 20 seconds a process starts ( a little icon with what looks
like a devils face appears) and then it goes to the BSOD. I have tried
everything except a clean install. He would prefer me not to do this as the
pc contains all of his coursework. I have tried safe mode, system restore
but that doesnt work, i have run cwsshredder, that found and destroyed a
coolwebsearch variant. I ran AVG, only with the signatures that were
available when the machine started playing up. I ran driver cleaner, to see
if it is a driver problem, I ran memtest, with no problems. can anybody
help?

Is there a AV prog that will run with full signatures in safe mode, ie one
that I can download to disc and run on the infected machine?

Disable that in msconfig's startup tab. Start > Run > msconfig

Sometimes simple things can do big things...

I ran into this on a computer the other night, but it was because I
changed motherboards... It's simple to keep all of your data and repair
the system, if it was working before there is a very good chance that a
"Repair/Reinstall" will work for you.

Get your Windows XP CD, google for XP Repair Reinstall, and then follow
the directions. In about 2 hours you will have your system back and you
can then reinstall drivers and all of your data will be there.

Avast! can be set to do a boot scan. I don't know that it will help;
just a suggestion.

Answered in detail in your other post. Please don't multipost; it makes
more work for everyone and will get you *less* help, not more. See this
for why:
