Whenever I attach a file, I'm usually looking for the most recent one in the
folder.
Unfortunately, whenever I return to attach a file, the View has returned to
Icon view rather than the Details-view I want.

How can I save my favorite view, with details?

You can't. It's pretty much the same for all File-> Open... dialogs.
