I lost all my emails days after backing up using windows backup. I backed up
on to an external drive.I tried recovering my emails by restoring the
outlook.pst files but that didn't work. If I open the hdd (H there is a
folder which seems to have the backup info. when I try to restore from this
file it tells me that the hdd (H isn't in the backup. how do I restore from
the external drive reather than the built in drive?

Hard to say at this level of detail. Consult the Help of your backup
software on how to restore a single file from backup. Once you have the
pst-file on your local hard drive (make sure you don't overwrite any
existing pst-file in the process), you can connect to it in Outlook via
File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...
