I employed basic shapes and inserted text boxes. The shapes snapped to sizes
that I do not want. AutoShape does not permit resizing. Clicking on the
objects does not permit resizing, only repositioning. What can I do?

Have a look at the grid and guides settings. Right click on your slide, in
the quick menu choose grid and guides, make sure there is no check next to
snap to grid. Now try to resize your AutoShape.

Right-click, choose Format Autoshape. On the Textbox tab, make sure you
don't have "resize to fit text" checked.
