Visit my website www.freelanceit.glowinternet.net Click the Win XP Faq
button and take a look at question 62
As stated at the top of the question you might also like to take a look at a
third party application called Erunt. For more details click on the Life
saver button on my site and you will find details of the application there.

The instructions for backing up the registry {Question 62} say to
click File>Export, then in the Export Registry File dialog box select
All.

When I click File>Export, I am immediately sent to My Documents to
save. Will the entire registry be backed up then since I don't have
the option to click: Export Registry File dialog box select All?

Thanks,
Bruce

Disregard. I didn't see the Export Range radio button. Got the drift
now.

Don't bother with that export nonsense. When you're computer won't boot
because the registry's trashed, it will be useless. System Restore is a
mess, too. Better just to turn it off and:

Just use ERUNT on a schedule. It's perfection.

The idea is to send it to My Documents and burn it and all your other
personal files to CD. I also do Favorites, Outlook Express and the
Address Book. It's easy, fast, and I know it works. I've had to do a
reinstall and everything that was not a part of XP was easily
reinstalled with the CD I made. I do a backup at least once a month.

That is a bad way to backup the registry. First it is as a very large
text file. Second it is very difficult to restore unless you have a
working windows - in which case you do not need to do it, and third a
re-import *merges* the file back, and does not remove suspect additional
entries.

The registry is backed up anyway each day as part of he days System
Restore point, and that is your first line for restoration. As a
second, I also suggest ERUNT

Clearly your method didn't help you avoid a reinstall of XP and of
everything that was not part of XP. And note that importing was only useful
after you'd reinstalled to a working XP. Depending on how much software and
configuration is needed, it could take days to get a system back the way it
was thru reinstallation. A tool like Erunt, however, lets you recover from
a corrupt registry in about 15 minutes or less, counting the time to boot
into DOS or Recovery Console or PEBuilder. Better, no? And then you've got
the registry back *exactly* the way it was--which is much more desirable
than merging parts of the old with the new. As the readme.txt in Erunt
says, "Note: The "Export registry" function in Regedit is USELESS (!) to
make a complete backup of the registry. Neither does it export the whole
registry (for example, no information from the "SECURITY" hive is saved),
nor can the exported file be used later to replace the current registry
with the old one. Instead, if you re-import the file, it is merged with the
current registry, leaving you with an absolute mess of old and new
entries." At the end of the day, export is mainly useful for ad-hoc
situations where you have a few keys you want to change and you'd like to
back them up before doing so.
