Hi,

A little history:

I've gained a new client that owns a .co.uk domain name. I wanted to
transfer the domain to my hosting service but my client has lost his
password to administer the domain... so the current host is (quite rightly)
refusing to carry out my request. I do however have the ftp information for
the account.

I don't want to go down the Nominet route to sort this problem out so I have
advised my client to register the .com domain name so I can offer him the
full hosting/design package (which he as agreed to). His .co.uk expires in
November and then will become available to buy back so in the mean time I'd
like to upload some code to his current .co.uk webspace which redirects
website visitors to the .com webspace.

Hope this makes sense! Any advice would be appreciated.

You can also do it this way:

In HTML view, add the following to the Head section:
<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="6; URL=http://www.yourwebsite.com">
The value given to 'content' is the number of seconds before the refresh
will take place; the value given to 'URL' is the page you want your visitor
sent to. You may also want to include a text link to the page in case your
visitor's browser does not support the 'refresh'.

All he has to do is ... if they have this feature 99.9% do is request it be
sent to the email address he used with the site (it's probably viewable in
whois anyway) and the pw will be sent to his email .. if he can't remember
which email he used he must remember all the email addy's he has ... just
use em one by one till he gets the right one ... contact the domain host if
this fails for what other info they need in order to get into the control
panel ... I can't belive any of this has not been tried ..if he knows the
email address he can also send from that email address a request for the
password which domain host is he using?

My new client is a self confessed technophobe and used a friend of a friend
to register the domain for him. This friend of a friend has now disappeared
of the face of the earth.

My clients address appears on the who is database but we have no idea what
email address appears on the account. I've approached the host's who are
www.a-q.co.uk but they will not carry out any of my requests. I've even
said I can post them a recent utility bill which has my clients address on
to prove ownership but they're still not interested.

Someone else can tell you, but I think there is a third party that can
mediate in things like this (not sure if you have to pay).

ah I see on their site they say their a member of http://www.nominet.org.uk/
how about contacting them and asking them to mediate?

The first thing I would do right now is go to namecheap.com and backorder
the domain just in case .. it will cost a little but it's much cheaper than
one of those iditotic search companies picking it up .... then when it comes
free it will be yours... if you don't someone else will buy just as a matter
of course belive me.

Did you try his email address in the request password feature?

I suppose the password was passed on verbally and he did not write it down?

Is the domain a co.uk ? if so he should have got a certificate if his
address was used?

I don't know all the in's and outs on domains but if you want to email me
off group please do so. You can always find me via my sig line.

I take you don't host the site with them? (always a GOOD thing)

This depends on which password you have forgotten.

If it is your (aq) customer account password, then you can retrieve it by
entering a domain name associated with your account on the login screen. The
details of your account will be sent via email to the address(es) on your
account.

If you have forgotten your password for email/webspace or other services,
then raise a support ticket requesting the passwords you require.

If the .co.uk site suports ASP, you simply rename the entry page "index.asp"
which would only contain the following code:
