I notice every now and then that a post shows up while I am not on the
Internet Explorer or Outlook Express. I am using WindowsXP and Explorer 6.x
and OE 6.x and SP1.

It is usually a message that invites you to a web page and I delete it at
once, but I have Norton AV 2003 installed and a Firewall too. MS Messenger
is un-installed.

How do these messages get through?

Wow! Karl.

Are you trying to set the record for most irrelevant newsgroups crossposted
to? :>( I had to trim the last non-existent one to get OE6 to post this
response.

If the "post" is showing up when OE is not running, then how does it show
up? By "post" we usually mean a message that has been "posted" to a
newsgroup. Do you have another definition? I cannot even see a post when
OE is not running.

If something pops up on your screen when you are not online, then it must be
coming from a program already on your computer. Something is trying to get
you to "phone home". Do you have an "always on" broadband connection? Have
you done a thorough search for spyware? Lately?

Get and run Ad-aware and SpyBot Search and Destroy. Then tell us what you
found.

Do these look like regular "posts" or do they have a gray background?
Is your firewall blocking ports 135-139?

Thanks, the second poster directed me to the area where the Windows
Messenger can be disabled.

Thanks

They look like regular "posts".
Shields up says that port is closed.

Download Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com It sounds like something
installed so Ad-ware on your computer. Just a wild guess.

5 Steps to computer safety:
1) Use a good quality anti-virus, and keep it up-to-date.
2) Use a firewall. The one in XP works fine, but there are better ones out
there.
3) Keep Windows up-to-date. It's your choice whether or not you want the
recommended updates, but the critical updates are just that - critical.
4) Beware of adware and spyware. There are many programs that will help to
protect your computer, but it's up to you to prevent it as well. Make sure
you read the agreement of the software before you install it. It should
tell you if it will be installing any additional programs.
5) Be cautious of attachments. Microsoft NEVER sends out attachments via
email. Always scan all attachments before opening them.

Change the obvious to the obvious.
