It's not ridiculous. In normal conditions you can view your archived emails
just like normal ones. Obviously something is wrong in your configuration.
You say that you can't open them. This is much too vague of an description
to offer any assistance. What happens when you try? Do you get any errors?
Can you open other items in other folders in that pst-file?
