I recently had to reinstall Frontpage 98 and Upgrade 2000 on a new computer.
after the upgrade and when I attempted to begin a new site, a dialogue box
said port 80 was not available or the web server was idle. What is this.

Also, trying to just use frontpage 98 without upgrade (after I had used it
for some six years), a dialogue box is now asking for the administrator's
users name and pass word which it had never done before.

What is this?

You don't open Port 80. Port 80 is one of some thousands of TCP ports, which
is the default port for HTTP, just as Port 25 is the default port for SMTP.
A web server listens on port 80 for Requests, and a browser sends Requests
to a web server on Port 80 (again, by default).

So, does your new computer have a web server? Are ou trying to access a
local web?

Didn't FP98 need PWS to be installed? Maybe that's the port 80 message - the server's not running or not installed?...I cant remember too long ago.

Yes, FP98 required by default to have a web server, and the problem is that the user did a full
install of FP98 w/PWS on a Windows XP, etc.
