How do I make hyperlinks work when writing an email?

When inserting the hyperlink into my email "when composing an email", I can't
click on to the hyperlink and have it work. Only after I either cut and
paste or send the hyperlink, does it seem to work. I think it might be some
security measure installed by Microsoft but I would like to disable it so
that I can check my hyperlinks without opening Word, IE, or sending it to
myself. Can someone help me out?

When you have Word set as the email editor use CTRL+Click

Yeah that seemed to work but is there a way to use this feature without
having to open Word? Can I do anything to check my hyperlink directly in
Outlook? I'm asking because I would just like to click directly in Outlook
without opening my Word as an email editor.

The Outlook editor will not make links active for the composer of the
message.
