I can certainly confirm the behavior you are describing. I suspect that you
will need a macro to take care of the updating. A macro is needed to update
the table of contents, anyway, since protected documents won't let you
update TOCs. For further assistance, ask in a programming newsgroup such as
microsoft.public.word.vba.general.
