how do I make the chapter title appear on every page of my book?

Hi,

Total newbie here - I am writing a book that is over 200 pages and I want
the chapter title to appear as a header in every page of that particular
chapter. I can create a header which appears in every page of the entire
book, but how do I specify that, for example, the chapter title of chapter 1
should end at the last page of chapter 1 and then beginning on chapter 2 the
header should display the title for chapter 2? Any change I make to the
header that I created seem to be universally applied to every page of the
book - how do I specify the chapter boundaries?

THank!

You can do this by inserting section breaks, but an easier way is to use a
StyleRef field in your header to pick up the style used for the chapter
title. See http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/StyleRef.htm

You want to put in your header a Field called STYLEREF (there are lots
of ways to do that, and for specifics you have to tell us which
version of Word you're using). So long as your chapter titles are all
in their own special Style, they will be picked up by those fields.

You inserted a Section Break at the start of each chapter, right?

But note that if your chapter title is too long to fit in a header
(which often happens), you'll have to simply type the shortened form
of the title into the header for that section. Be sure to uncheck
"Same as Previous" in both the section where you type the short
version and in the section after that one.

Or, you could simply type the chapter heading into each chapter's
header, and it will appear on each page in its section.

Note that usually the book title or the chapter author appears on one
side and the chapter title on the other side, rather than the chapter
title on every page.

Section breaks aren't required for StyleRef, though they are often advisable
for other reasons (a fact that has escaped the producers of some
print-on-demand books I've seen).

I am using word 2000 - how do I make my chapter titles into Styles? Does it
have to do with the formatting of my table of contents (which contains all
the chapter titles)? Thanks!

If they go into your ToC, then they do all have the same Style
(probably Heading1?). The name of the style they're in is what you
enter into the STYLEREF field.
