How do I lock sort columns in Outlook?

I sometimes accidentally click on a column header in a mail folder which then
sorts by that column. Is there any way to stop that behavior and always sort
by a set column and direction?

There is no column lockout from incorrectly positioned mouse clicks.
The cure is quick and simple: click again to change sort order or
click on the column that you really want to use for sorting.

"Doctor, it hurts when I do this."
"Then stop doing that."

That is a very simplistic answer to an anoying situation. Sometimes it is
difficult to realise that emails are sorted by the wrong column until new
messages seem to disapear. The main issue with the analogy is choice: I do
not choose to accidentally change the sort.

There should be an option to lock a view so that accidental clicks and/or
drags do not change the view.

And then there would be thousands of posts by users that want to know
why they can't change their view with a simple mouse click. Please
some, **** off others. Microsoft has their feedback page if you want
them to see your suggestion.

All too often, I think Microsoft elects to simply change the behavior from
one thing to another in an effort to please the most (vocal) people. There
are so many cases where they could have simply added an option to produce
the desired behavior and let people decide which of the two behaviors they
want. The order of junk e-mail and rule processing is one such example.
Back in Outlook 2003 SP1, instead of swapping the order outright so that the
junk filter operated first, they could have make the junk filter first order
the default but added a toggle that allowed people to revert to the pre-SP1
behavior. Take-it-or-leave-it approaches are less than palitable to the
end-user.
