I have a network that is workgroup based with xp's and w2k's
and have a problem where logon passwords keep having to be
renewed.

There must be a setting somewhere so that the password doesn't
die after a month (or whatever).

If its just on the local machine then it's in control panel>admin tools>
computer management click plus next to local users and groups, and
click on users folder. then right click your user and go to properties
and you could set to never expire. If you don't want that then go to
admin tools>local security settings and click on plus next to account
policies and click on password policy. here you can set password policy.
