I am trying to send junk mail to the junk file, however, by the time I click
on the drop down menu to do that, the emailhas already openned. I am
concerned about viruses and therefore would like the garbage to go directly
to the junk file.

Do you mean that the Preview Pane or Reading pane is set to mark it as read
while you are previewing it?

2 options, turn off the preview or reading pane or change the setting. The
setting's at Tools | Options| Other | reading or preview pane.

PLEASE make an effort to at least state your version so I don't have to tell
you all the permutations of what a button/function is called in each version
next time.

If you have a message that is junk, moving it tothe Junk E-mail folder does
exactly nothing. It doesn't modify Outlook in any way whatsoever.
Moreover, adding the sender's address to the Bocked Senders List is nearly
pointless because SPAMmers use throw-away addresses that won't be used
again, so adding that address to the list won't decrease the amount of junk
you receive.

Once it's in the Inbox, you're best off just deleting the message if you've
determined it's junk. Don't worry about viruses. The Reading Pane won't
execute them, so you're safe.
