Did the computer power off without any error messages? Then it shut

That was due to hardware technicalities. The motherboards for which
Win9x was designed were incapable of accepting a power-off command from
the OS. Such hasn't been the case since the days of Win2K.

Seems completely unnecessary to me, but you can write your own logoff
script to produce such dialog box, if it'll give you peace of mind.
