Hello,

When I restart or shutdown Windows XP 64 bit it says:

"Windows XP is shutting down..."

There is no confirmation screen that it properly shutdown.

How do I know if Windows XP shut down properly ???

Windows 98 used to show a screen:

"It's now safe to turn off your computer".

It would help if future versions would shortly show a screen:

"Windows XP was shutdown, the computer will now be turned off" (or
restarted).

Then after 5 seconds or so, it shuts down the computer or restarts.

That problem isn't confined to 64-bit, it affects 32-bit Win2000 and XP too.

On laptops you sometimes find that pressing the power button results in a
very rapid shutdown, too good to be true, in fact. The shutdown was an
improper one, of course, as evidenced by chkdsk running on restart.

Why? Not sure. Possibly an ACPI issue.

My usual workaround is to use a desktop shortcut instead of the button. Set
the button to hibernate, to prevent accidents.

Funny you mention this

For the first time ever on my new dream pc I pressed the power button in an
attempt to shutdown or restart the pc since the keyboard and mouse were not
working anymore.

I was surprised to see that windows xp 64 bit actually begane shutting down
immediatly.

Normally I would hold the power button for 10 seconds to shutdown the
computer, but on this new computer I only have to press the power button
once like 1 second to make the computer shutdown, that's a good improvement
compared to older computers.

So it went from the login screen to shutdown, I think it went a bit faster
than normal, but it still seemed a proper shutdown, but I just wanna know
for sure.

I have been wondering if checkdisk is running each time I start up my
computer or if some defrag program is running ?!

Hmm... I don't like hibernate... so not gonna do it... but thanks anyway for
your post.

I guess checkdisk is not running after all because then I would see the
checkdisk screen.

So that leaves maybe a defrag program ? Or maybe windows xp 64 bit simply
needs to load a lot or so...

Quite weird.

Maybe it's cleaning the page file of 8 GB or so ?

I'd just would like to know what the hell is going on during boot mostly...

Knowning if the system shutdown properly might help.

Actually the funny thing is... sometimes I am even wondering what the hell
it is doing during shutdown because that can take a bit long sometimes too.

So overall I wish windows would give more insight into what's going on !

Having payed 5000 euro's for my computer I think I have the right to know
what's going on LOL.

Did the computer power off without any error messages? Then it shut
down properly.

That was due to hardware technicalities. The motherboards for which
Win9x was designed were incapable of accepting a power-off command from
the OS. Such hasn't been the case since the days of Win2K.

Seems completely unnecessary to me, but you can write your own logoff
script to produce such dialog box, if it'll give you peace of mind.

It isn't a "problem;" it's by design. Hardware has advanced since Win98.

Then don't press the power button; use the OS to control the shutdown.
