How do I keep the spacing on sig consistent in html and plaintext

The line spacing on my sig changes radically (gets much wider) in plain text
than in html--how can I create more consistency?

      1st Aug 2007
When creating your HTML signature, use SHIFT+ENTER instead of ENTER at the
end of each line.
