I am running slide show presentations from a laptop through a projector onto
a screen. I want the slide sorter view to remain on the computer monitor
while the slide show is being presented. This gives the operator the ability
to jump between slides as the situation allows.

You might want to look at the following:
Use slide sorter view to change the slide on slide show

OfficeOne Animations - Add over 50 animation effects to PowerPoint

Powershow only works with Windows PCs. Is there any way a Mac user can keep
slide sorter view in PTT while show is running (and jump slides
accordingly)???

You might want to ask in the Mac group if there is an equivalent
functionality. The news group microsoft.public.mac.office.powerpoint is for
Mac users.

PowerShow - View multiple PowerPoint slide shows simultaneously
