How do I install Russian "Codepage 1251?"

Hello,

I've tried to install "Prompt-XT" translater software that comes only
in Russian version. I get the error about code page 1251 not being
installed. Ive tried to install Chessmaster9000, and English teaching
software, all with only Russian installations. Although they do not
give this error, the install fails.

After attempting to install four Russian software programs, none have
installed.

I have over a dozen Cyrillic fonts installed, including those that
have 1251 asscoiated with them. I don't believe this is a font
problem. My guess is codepage 1251 is installed when the OS is
installed.

Running WinXP SP2.

Thanks,
Willlburrr

Check the advanced tab of Regional and Language Options in
Control Panel. Here you can install code pages. You may
also need to set the language used for non-Unicode
programs before your programs will work.

Found the answer:

Note that to run Russian software, more than "user level" changes need
to be made. A system level change, "code pages" need to be modified.
User level mods are fonts, keyboard and locale changes.

The procedure to "Russify" Windows for XP and XP+SP1 is very simple.
Win2000, ME, 98.. are a bit more difficult. Language packs are
included in most later Windows versions, especially WinXP.

There is no noticeable difference for all of standard American/English
applications. That is, the code page system level changes are
transparent.

Full Russification of Windows Operating Systems:
(Russian as System Default Locale; Cyrillic as System Code Page)

Thanks for help!

Right - choosing "Russian" as a language for non-Unicode
programs is all that person needs to do (no installation
of code pages is required) - that will make
"Cyrillic(Windows) 1251" a System Code Page - then
programs with Cyrillic letters in their _interface_
will work fine. Details - in the Full Russification
section of my site.
