Hello

I have Windows Professional XP with service pack 3 and I seem to remember it
was 32bits when I bought it

But my processor is an AMD 64 processor

Is this possible and what do I do when i have a choice of download for
windows 32 or 64 ?

Thanks in advance

Dave Neve

Right click My Computer - Properties. Do you see 64-bit anywhere in the
System Properties? If not, you have a 32 bit XP Pro.

I'm not familiar with AMD processor but 64-bit processors can run 32-bit
operating system without any problem. You should get 32bit version of
windows updates unless you have a 64bit WinXP installed.

By what you wrote it sounds like you have a 32 bit OS running on
64bit processor.

If you are downloading software to use on your Windows XP, then yo
would use 32bit

If you have to ask and SP3 is installed, it's 32-bit (x86): There isn't a
SP3 for WinXP 64-bit.

Chances are you have a 32 bit operating system running on 64 bit processor.
Dell used to do this quite a lot in those bad old days!

So in a nutshell, it is possible. If you have a choice of download (god
knows from where - Pig-Bear used to run a crack site not so long ago), then
go for 64 bit of Windows 7. The reason is that most of your existing
application packages, either 32 bit or 64 bit, will run without any
workaround from your part.

There is no need to speculate.

Read this and figure it out:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/827218

Or if you still have questions:

Click Start, Run and in the box enter:

msinfo32

Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select
All, Copy and then paste the information back here.

There will be some personal information (like System Name and User
Name), and whatever appears to be private information to you, just
delete it from the pasted information.

This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork.

Then it still is.

That's not really relevant to the OS version.

Choose 32. If you've chosen incorrectly, the download will not install.

If you're asking, you have a 32 bit version of XP. This is certain because
64-bit versions of XP were unusual OEM versions at extra cost. You'd
remember having specified that you wanted to pay more to meet some
significant technical need.

Many modern processors can handle 64-bit OS versions as well as 32-bit.
