do I have a temperature problem?

I have a KR7A-RAID CPU with AMD 1900+ (model 6) CPU using Thermaltake
Volcano 6 heatsink. Yesterday (for the first time) the CPU alarm went off
when the CPU reached 60C. According to the WinBond Hardware Doctor monitor,
my system is idling at 53C and climbs closer to 58-59 in just a few minutes
under some load. The system is a little over a year old.

Are these temperatures a problem? I added a second hard drive about 2
months ago, but I don't think I materially changed the air flow conditions
(which between the graphics card and the location of the IDE ports/cables
seems necessarily stifled).

Thank you for any comments!

Pretty warm. Do you run a case fan? 60 is the limit before risking
instabilities.

I have 2 case fans, although between the graphics card (GeForce3-ti-200) and
IDE cables, the air flow is hardly unencombered. Do you think it be safe
enough to the system for me to just raise the monitor to 65 or 70C, and try
to forget about it? I've never installed or removed a heatsink before and
I'm a little intimidated by it.

By the way, do you know if the KR7A Abit motherboard will automatically
shutdown the system if it reaches a critical temperature? I couldn't find
anything about this in the manual--just that "an alarm goes off".

Thanks,
Bill

You'll have to wait for someone with more experience.

But, you can tuck the IDE cables such that they aren't in the way between
the bottom intake and the cpu.

You say you might try and forget about it, but I'm sure you'll feel better
with a cooler system. Maybe you should try some of the following options to
cool down the air inside your case:

Silent stuff:
1. Round cables
http://www.hardcorecooling.us/subcat...217&1=256&2=-1
2. Zalman VGA Heatpipe Cooler ( ZM80A-HP) for your GeForce3 Ti200
http://www.hardcorecooling.us/produc...21&1=261&3=298
3. Ramsinks
http://www.hardcorecooling.us/subcat...216&1=267&2=-1

Noisy stuff:
1. Upgrade your CPU fan
http://www.hardcorecooling.us/subcat...1=257&2=-1&6=1
2. System Exhaust Blower

I would like to thank everyone who has provided me with comments and
suggestions.

As an experiment, I just removed the IDE cable from the second hard drive I
had installed, but it doesn't have seem to have made any difference in the
temperature.

The temperature seems to peak at about 61 (during a good game of "tip top"
at yahoo).

When I built my system, I didn't appreciate how warm video cards get, and I
probably would not have put my sound card in the slot right next to it.
Makes me consider moving the sound card to another available slot.

An easy possible solution seems like a PCI slot exhaust fan. A better one
seems like a good heatsink. Is any AMD heatsink going to fit on my
KR7A-Raid motherboard?

Again, think you for your help. I could not have built a system in the
first place with out it!

If you do any high quality recording, you might consider that the gpu fan
motor being next to the video card might affect it.

Mine peaks at about 61 at the very hottest as well. I have XP1800. I have
no probs so won't be doing anything.

I want to thank all of you again for advising me!

I found the main problem! I used a can of air to blow all the dust out of
cpu fan (<dah>) -- and reduced my temperatures by 4 to 8 degrees. There were
some other minor factors involved too, but I'm sure that was the principle
one. Now I'm idling at 49C and running at 53C under load. Much better than
54-60!
