Do I have to edit a subdocument from within the master document?

I have set up a master document with subdocuments (chapters). I now need to
make some changes to one of the chapters - do I have to do this from within
the master document or can I edit the subdocument and then somehow
automatically update the master?

Hi JC,

You don't _have_ to do this from within the master, but you may do so if you
like.

Please note that you cannot edit a subdocument within the master if it is
open separately. Changes made in a subdocument that is open separately are
_only_ reflected in the master document when a user saves the subdocument -
you cannot update the master document to show its most recent state.

Success,

You should never edit a sub-document from within the master document, unless
absolutely necessary. This can cause damage to both the master and the
sub-documents.

It's much better to open the sub-document directly in order to make the change.
When you open the Master Document later, any changes should update
automatically over the links.
