In Vista, right-click a PPT file and choose Open With | Choose Default
Program.
You should be able to browse to PowerPoint.EXE and set it to open PPT files.
Be sure you have "always use selected program to open this kind of file"
checked before you browse to PowerPoint.EXE.
Then repeat for PPS and PPTX and PPSX files as necessary.
