How do I get wireless connection from laptop to router?

Hi

I'm very experienced with standalone PC's but new to wireless so not sure
where to start...

I'm asking on behalf of a friend. He wants to connect his laptop (with
built-in wireless) to the wireless ADSL router (Netgear DG834) in his
office. Specifically to share the ADSL rather than share files.

I'm sure he'll need all sorts of permissions to connect and share the
ADSL connection.

I believe his laptop can see a connection but it wont let him in.

I'd be very grateful if someone can tell me what I need to do to get this to
work or point me in the
right direction e.g a web site with step by step instuctions?

God it seems like a bit of a minefield. So many things to ensure are in
place! So I'm a bit baffled as to the correct order things need to be setup.

Thanks for any info.

Ian

He needs to know the wireless security setup of the router:
It could be using a MAC address permission list. He would need to get his
computer on the list.
It could be using WEP. He would need to know the WEP key.
It is probably using SSID so he can get the nework ID to "see" the network
as he does. If not, he needs to know the name of the wireless network.
And, there may be more but these are typical.

If there is *no* wireless security, then anybody could connnect in..... Not
what I'd do for a company wireless LAN.

Well, if "his" office wants him to connect to the network, they will
give him the necessary "permissions" and the setup options that he
needs.

Hi Jimbo

Yep you would think so but all the people in the office know zilch about
PC's.

They had some guy come in to set it all up and supply a few upgraded PC's
from their previous ones.

But guess what... the new PC's werent upgrades at all - more like a sideways
step than up and all the money he charged for software... not a disc or
certificate or licence in sight!!

So my mate isnt trying to do anything he shouldnt be. But the guy they got
in to help them sure is up to mischeif! But thats another story!

Thanks Fred. At least I know where to start from.

I can access the router so I'm hoping I'll be able to find out the WEP key
(if any) from there?

Ironically, its encouraging that he cant hook up so easily - it suggests
something is in place to prevent unauthorised access.

Well, in that case a baseball bat, err, excuse me, a cricket paddle to
the knee would be appropriate.
