How do I get a video in Powerpoint to fade in while playing?

I have a video I want to fade in while playing but at the moment I can only
get it to fade in THEN play.

PowerPoint has no such capability, it simply plays the file as it is handed
to it. To do what you want you will need to edit the video file and then
insert it into PPT.

I haven't tried it yet but could there be a simple work around ? By starting
the video clip and a solid color graphic file the same time, with the same
color as your background with the graphic on top, fade it out which will
make the video appear to be fading in?

Try it and let us now, but I don't think it will work. Videos always play
on top of everything else in PowerPoint, so I don't think the solid
graphic will show at all while the video is playing.

Yup you're right. It works well with animated .gif's , even ani.gif on top
of ani.gif but not with video because as you say video always plays on top..

Paul is correct- use a black (or whatever background color you are using)
rectangle to custon animate out (exit effect) the same time the video starts.
The effect will appear to "fade in" your video.
