I've just "moved up" to Office 2007 from Office XP. How can I get rid of the
annoying Access startup page, "Getting Started with Microsoft Office Access",
or at least modify it to get rid of the "Featured Online Templates" and
"Microsoft Office Online" frames. I prefer a clean, uncluttered interface, as
in Access XP. I know that you can avoid this by opening a database file
directly, but that isn't always the most efficient method of working.

You can not get rid of this feature. This is the 'new' startupscreen of
Access 12. If you don't want it you have to start up a database indeed. I
agree it takes a little time to get used to (kind of a busy screen) but after
some time you stop thinking about it :-)

This may just as much of a pain as the startup screen. But you can go to
the Access options and there's an option to start last used database.
it's under the Advanced options.

The thing is under previous versions of Access you could have Access 'the application' open and not necessarily have a database open at the same time. From within this environment you could initiate various tasks like compaction on unopened databases. There doesn't seem to be a view with Access 2007 to enable the same functionality directly from opening Access. I want to see the Access environment with the menus and toolbars without having a database open. Is there a way of making this possible please? There are times when I think Microsoft should adopt the 'if it's not broke don't fix it mentality'
