How do I Get Rid of "###" in an Excel field?

Title tells all. This is probably so basis Old Hands will laff selves silly
but I'm roadkill alongside the on-ramp to the Infobahn. I've bludgeoned
Excel into taking new fields, but problem keeps recurring and I'd like a
permanent fix.

Make the column wider so that the entire number can be displayed.

Negative times or dates will show as #########

If numeric contents are too long #### will show...........widen the column.

If long strings of text, change format of cell to "General"
