how do I get journal to record an excel document?

Help just says to setup Journal to record microsoft apps by going into Tools,
Options, Journal Options, the checking the boxes in "Also record files
from:". I did that but nothing is getting recorded. I can go get the file,
copy and paste the link in the journal entry, but that's clumsy and it's not
what the help says should be happening. Can someone throw me a bone? DanL
