How do I force Outlook 2003 to close archive folders by default?

In Outlook 2003 the default action appears to be that archive folders are
visible. I only want to see them when I need to look for them. How do I
set this as the default behavior.

Hello Henry,

Right click on the archive folder and choose 'Close'. This closes the
archive folder and it is not longer visible.

Has anyone had a problem where the archive wouldn't close?
TIA
