How do I find closed folders?

I was doing some practice sessions provided by Microsoft online and when I
was done a folder that was full of real contacts was empty. I can't find any
of the contacts in deleted folders or even a search using the search feature
from the start menu. Are they gone, or am I just not looking in the right
way?
