Win2k Server a user deleted a file from a network share. No backup of said
file. Is this file actually gone or is a copy being held somewhere?

Thanks.

The location on the drive that the file is located has been marked as
free space. If you act quickly with an "undelete" program you may find
the file recoverable. Once the "free space" is overwritten, data recover
experts may be the only way to get anything at all.

Gone. You may be able to use a program like Restoration to recover it if it
hasn't been overwritten.

When I was a young lad, just learning about computer software development, I
asked the same question: "Where does deleted stuff go?"

With a straight face, they told me, "Into the bit bucket."

Pass it on.
