How do I extend the size of the system partition (C: drive) in a laptop which
has XP Home Edition SP2 so that I can use all free space on the computer for
the C: drive. The hard drive had previously been partitioned into two
drives, C: and D: The D: drive is no longer needed and has been deleted.
The question then is how can I use this free space and extend the size of the
C: drive. The DISKPART extend commend does not work because the C: drive is
the system partition.

You need third party software - Symantec Partition Magic.

You have to use a third party program like partition magic. XP has no tools
to alter the size of the partitions without deleting the data. The only
workaround (if you have the necessary software) would be make an image with
norton ghost or acronis true image. Burn it to cd or dvd. Use the xp cd to
create one large partition then restore the image to the newly created
drive.

Thanks - this is very helpful. I reviewed the online Symantec Partition
Magic documentation and this confirms your recommendation. However, it says
there is a 7 .8 GB limitation for Windows NT. Do you know if this limitation
also applies to XP?

That's a limitation unique to Windows NT.
