I was able to download and select AIM AOL Instant
Messenger as my default messenger but Windows messenger
continues to load in the startup of my 2ndary winxp
account for another user and I want AIM AOL instant
messenger to be the default messenger for chat. So how do
I get messenger to stop implementing itself when this user
logs onto windows xp please? I had to reformat my entire
hard drive this week and so the settings from before were
lost. The reason I want to use AOL IM instead of Windows
Messenger is because the Windows Messenger seems to take
up bandwidth. I can shut off AOL IM and it doesn't let
any traffic through its proxy server which appears much
more private.

Greetings John,

You can simply disable Windows Messenger by opening it up (click Start, then Run, type
"msmsgs" and click OK), click Tools, Options, Preferences tab and uncheck 'Run this Program
when Windows starts' or 'Run Windows Messenger when Windows starts' (depending on version) as
well as 'Allow this program to run in the background' or 'Allow Windows Messenger to run in
the background' (depending on version).
